演題：The Effects of Attitude Framing on Attitude Strength

要旨：In his presentation, Dr. Bizer will discuss how the manner in which individuals perceive their own attitudes has an impact on the strength of those attitudes. Any attitude can be conceptualized in a positive or negative manner. For example, a person who favors economic reforms could either think of that attitude as "supporting economic reforms" or "opposing the current economic situation." Using this sort of manipulation allows us to observe how this change in framing - even though it does not impact the attitude itself - can impact the strength of the attitude. Specifically, a series of experiments shows that regardless of the issue, when people are forced to conceptualize their attitudes negatively, they show much more resistance to persuasive messages than when they conceptualize their attitudes positively. That is, "opposers" showed more resistance to persuasion than did "supporters." This research has important ramifications on attitude-strength research, as it shows that the manner in which we conceptualize our own attitudes can affect the strength of those attitudes.
